SESSION OF 2002

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 435

As Recommended by Senate Committee on

Agriculture

Brief*

SB 435 would repeal a number of statutes which comprise the Livestock Remedy Law and amend several other statutes which currently refer to the Livestock Remedy Law. Among the laws which would be repealed is the one which imposed a fee on livestock remedy products.

Background

This bill was introduced at the request of the Secretary of Agriculture. At the hearing on the bill a spokesperson from the Kansas Department of Agriculture explained that livestock remedies are usually over-the-counter medications for animals and that field inspectors typically check livestock remedy products for product registration, labeling requirements, and the expiration date. The Committee was told that repealing the Livestock Remedy Law would not leave consumers without protection. The Committee learned that the federal Food and Drug Administration verifies that the product is safe as labeled. No one appeared in opposition to the bill.
