SESSION OF 2001

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON HOUSE BILL NO. 2411

As Amended by House Committee on
Federal and State Affairs

Brief (1)

HB 2411 would require that a school district's patriotic observation program include a daily recitation of a specific excerpt from the Declaration of Independence. The current law requires the patriotic observation programs to include a daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

The House Committee amended the bill to impose the new requirement on all accredited K-12 schools, both public and private.

Background

Representative Cook testified in support of the bill. A representative of the Kansas Association of School Boards spoke in opposition to the bill.

The fiscal note indicates that the bill would have no fiscal effect on state revenues or expenditures.
