SESSION OF 2001

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 314

As Recommended by Senate Committee on
Elections and Local Government

Brief (1)

SB 314 deletes a restriction on political activities of Kansas Highway Patrol members. The prohibition states that members shall in no way be active or participate in any political contest in any primary, general, or special election or participate in politics, except to cast such member's ballot. Violation of this prohibition would result in termination of the member.

Background

A lobbyist for the Kansas Highway Patrol testified in support of the bill. He said that passage of SB 314 would allow members of the Kansas Highway Patrol the same opportunities to participate in political activities as any other classified state employee.

No other conferees testified on the bill.

The bill would have no fiscal impact.
