SB 5 would amend the definition section of the Kansas Higher Education Coordination Act to add "municipal university" to the list of institutions defined as "postsecondary educational institutions."

Background

SB 5 was introduced by the Legislative Educational Planning Committee at the request of Washburn University and the State Board of Regents. The current definition of "postsecondary educational institution" includes public universities, community colleges, technical colleges, and vocational education schools.

Appearing in support of the bill were representatives of Washburn University and the State Board of Regents.

The House Committee on Higher Education amended the bill to make it effective upon publication in the Kansas Register.

The legislation has no fiscal impact.
