SESSION OF 2000

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 578

As Amended by Senate Committee on

Judiciary

Brief (1)

SB 578 would allow the chief judge of any judicial district, in addition to the current debt collection system administered by the Attorney General, to enter into contracts for collection services for collection of debts owed to the courts or for collection of restitution.

The Senate Committee amended the bill to permit any chief judge to set up a debt collection program in addition to any program run by the Attorney General. As introduced, the bill would have provided for the district court debt collection to be exclusive and a complete alternative to the existing Attorney General program.

Background

The Attorney General's Office expressed reservations about the bill, as introduced.

The bill would have no fiscal impact on the state.
