SESSION OF 1998

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON HOUSE

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 5024

As Recommended by House Committee on Tourism

Brief(1)

H.C.R. 5024 would designate the square dance as the official state folk dance and the polka as a state ethnic dance.

Background

H.C.R. 5024 is very similar to 1997 S.B. 168, as introduced. In 1997, that bill's supporters included Senator Harris and a number of individuals, and no opponents of the bill testified, at the hearings before the Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs and the House Committee on Tourism.

During the 1997 Session, S.B. 168 subsequently was amended substantially, and the provisions relating to the square dance and polka were removed.

The fiscal note for 1997 S.B. 168 stated that the bill would have no fiscal impact.
