SESSION OF 1998

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON HOUSE BILL NO. 2231

As Amended by House Committee on

Judiciary

Brief(1)

H.B. 2231 would allow a lessor of a rented motor vehicle to contact local law enforcement officials when a vehicle is not returned within seven days of a proper notice to return. The vehicle can then be placed on a local, state, or national computer system that lists stolen vehicles.

If such a motor vehicle is stopped by a law enforcement official, the vehicle may be seized and the lessor will be notified that the lessor can retrieve the motor vehicle after it is photographed and the vehicle identification number is recorded for evidentiary purposes.

Amendments are technical in nature.
