SESSION OF 1998

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 577

As Recommended by Senate Committee on

Judiciary

Brief(1)

S.B. 577 would give the Kansas Supreme Court authority to create District Magistrate Judge positions in addition to those positions already approved in statute for the courts. Currently, Kansas statutes specify the number and location of District Magistrate Judges.

Background

The bill was supported by the Kansas Supreme Court and the Office of Judicial Administration. Because the bill only authorizes the Supreme Court to create judgeships, S.B. 577 would have no direct fiscal effect. If any additional judgeships are created under this authority, any additional financing to support them would have to be approved by the Legislature in the appropriation process.
