SESSION OF 1998

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 497

As Recommended by Senate Committee on

Federal and State Affairs

Brief(1)

The bill would amend the statute that creates the Joint Committee on Corrections and Juvenile Justice Oversight. The proposed amendment would allow members of the Joint Committee to receive compensation, travel, and subsistence expenses for attending any meeting arising out of activities of the Committee. Such meetings would have to be authorized by either the Joint Committee as a whole or the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and Ranking Minority Member of the Committee.

Background

The Joint Committee on Corrections and Juvenile Justice Oversight introduced S.B. 497. The bill would allow members to be compensated for subcommittee and other meetings that do not involve the entire Committee. Under current law, members are only entitled to compensation, travel, and subsistence expenses for full Committee meetings.

The fiscal note prepared by the Division of the Budget states that the actual fiscal impact of the bill cannot be determined because the locations and frequency of meetings is unknown. The bill also states that Legislative Administrative Services estimates the cost of a two-day meeting of the full Committee would be approximately $6,081.
