The Senate was called to order by Vice-President Alicia Salisbury.

The roll was called with thirty-four senators present.

Senators Becker, Jones, Karr, Langworthy, Oleen, and Steineger were excused.

Vice-President Salisbury introduced as guest chaplain, Pastor Irving Jennings, Faith Fel-
lowship Church, Hanston, Kansas, who delivered the invocation:

      Father God,

      Once again we invoke Your presence in this Senate chamber, and earnestly request
      Your peace in the midst of the legislative storms.

      Out of the cries for help and government intervention we need to hear Your clarion
      voice of truth over the howling winds of opinion.

      Exalt Your eternal Word as a standard for truth and virtue I pray. And give these
      men and women a double portion of Your wisdom. Cause them to know Your
      thoughts and feel Your heart for the people they represent.

      Because of us, and if need be in spite of us, Your servants, establish Your kingdom
      in hearts and lives all across this great state.

      Let us not fail to give You thanks for Your provision and protection. You have
      been so good to us.

      And by all means, we plead for Your forgiveness when we get caught up in our
      own agenda and miss Yours! And, Father, please empower us to forgive our col-
      leagues and constituents when they do the same.

      Deliver us from ourselves and the evil schemes and devices around us. Lead us
      away from the corridors of compromise with virtue and integrity. Give us the courage
      to stand for what is right.

      May the memory of these Senators in generations to come reflect a love for God
      and their fellowman.

      For when we are but dust and archaeologists explore our remains, Your Kingdom
      will stand, Your power will remain, and Your glory shine brighter still.
