The roll was called with thirty-nine senators present.

Invocation by Chaplain Fred S. Hollomon:
Heavenly Father,
Yesterday we observed the birthday anniversary of a man whose non-violent protest
against racial discrimination revolutionized our country.
As a Baptist preacher, Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke from an understanding of Your
word as spoken by Moses (Deuteronomy 10:17), Jehoshaphat (II Chronicles 19:7),
James (James 2:1), and the apostles Peter (Acts 11:34) and Paul (Romans 2:11) who
said that God shows no partiality, no favoritism, and does not judge by outward
appearance. He was also familiar with the conduct of Your Son Who went out of His
way to minister to the discriminated.
Laws were passed which forced people to change their official treatment of other
races. But laws seldom change minds, and cannot change hearts.
O God, help us not only to obey your commandments but to love your command-
ments and to love one another regardless of the color of our skin.
Draw us closer to You, Lord,
As sisters and as brothers;
For the closer we get to You, O God,
The closer we get to each other.
I pray in the Name of Christ,
