The following petitions were presented and filed:
HP 2001, by Rep. Hutchins, a petition requesting the Square Dance be designated as
the State Folk Dance, signed by Paul Kropp and 38 other citizens of Brown, Jackson,
Jefferson and Shawnee County, Kansas, and Richardson County, Nebraska.
HP 2002, by Rep. Boston, a petition to pass and sign a law designating the Square Dance
as the State Folk Dance of Kansas, signed by Nancy Meierowsky and 24 other citizens of
Peabody, Hutchinson and Newton, Kansas.
HP 2003, by Rep. Shore, a petition favoring a law designating the Square Dance as the
State Folk Dance of Kansas.

RE: Communication to the House and Senate pursuant to K.S.A. 22-3703
Gentlemen:
This is my report of pardons to the Legislature pursuant to K.S.A. 22-3703. That statute
requires that I communicate to both houses at each regular session a list of all persons
pardoned by me during the preceding year.
For calendar year 1997, no pardons or clemencies were granted. A total of 21 applications
for pardon or clemency were denied.
My policy regarding pardons and clemencies remain the same, i.e., that they should be
granted when a gross miscarriage of justice has occurred and all other judicial remedies
have been exhausted and have failed to correct the injustice. I have yet to review an appli-
cation that fits this criteria.

From Steven A. Williams, Secretary of Wildlife and Parks, pursuant to K.S.A. 32-844 and
K.S.A. 845, the report of real estate transactions completed by the Kansas Department of
Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) for calendar year 1997.
The complete report is kept on file and open for inspection in the office of the Chief
Clerk.
CONSENT CALENDAR
