  9             AN  ACT concerning motor vehicle air-conditioning refrigerants; amend-
10             ing K.S.A. 8-1747 and repealing the existing section.

12       Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Kansas:
13             Section  1. K.S.A. 8-1747 is hereby amended to read as follows: 8-
14       1747. (a) The term "air-conditioning equipment" as used or referred to
15       in this section shall mean mechanical vapor compression refrigeration
16       equipment which is used to cool the driver's or passenger compartment
17       of any motor vehicle.
18             (b) Air-conditioning equipment shall be manufactured, installed and
19       maintained with due regard for the safety of the occupants of the vehicle
20       and the public, and shall not contain any refrigerant which is toxic to
21       persons or which is flammable at or below 1000 degrees fahrenheit.
22             (c) The secretary of transportation may adopt and enforce safety
23       requirements, rules or regulations and specifications consistent with the
24       requirements of this section applicable to such equipment, which shall
25       correlate with and, so far as possible, conform to the current recom-
26       mended practice or standard applicable to such equipment approved by
27       the society of automotive engineers.
28             (d) No person shall have for sale, offer for sale, sell or equip any
29       motor vehicle with any such equipment unless it complies with the
30       requirements of this section.
31             (e) No person shall operate on any highway any motor vehicle
32       equipped with any air-conditioning equipment unless said equipment
33       complies with the requirements of this section. 
34       Sec.  2. K.S.A. 8-1747 is hereby repealed.
35        Sec.  3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its
36       publication in the statute book.
