                    HOUSE BILL No. 2807           By Committee on Education           2-4             9             AN ACT concerning school districts; relating to observance of periods of
10             silence in classrooms; amending K.S.A. 72-5308a and repealing the
11             existing section.

13       Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Kansas:
14           Section 1. K.S.A. 72-5308a is hereby amended to read as follows: 72-
15       5308a. The board of education of every school district may authorize the
16       observance of a brief period of silence in each ;µblic school classroom ;(tri-stars)e
17       teacher in charge may observe a brief period of silence maintained by the
18       district with the participation of all the pupils therein assembled at the
19       opening of every school day. This The period of silence shall not be con-
20       ducted as a religious exercise but shall be an opportunity for silent prayer
21       or for silent reflection on the anticipated activities of the day.
22           Sec. 2. K.S.A. 72-5308a is hereby repealed.
23           Sec. 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its
24       publication in the statute book.
