Minutes for SB256 - Committee on Transportation

Short Title

Designating a portion of United States highway 50 as the SGT Gregg Steimel and PFC Richard Conrardy memorial highway.

Minutes Content for Tue, Jan 30, 2018

Chairperson Petersen opened the hearing on this bill.  Scott Wells gave an overview of this highway naming bill.

Senator Doll gave proponent testimony (Attachment 1) and said Wright, Kansas is a city of 200 people.  In July 1970, the town lost two young men in the Vietnam War.  Richard Conrardy was posthumously awarded a Silver Star for his bravery and devotion to helping his fellow soldiers.  Gregg Steimel was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Star (second highest medal), a Bronze Star, and a National Defense Service medal.  This bill would provide for a portion of U.S. Highway 50 to be named the Sgt Gregg Steimel and Pfc Richard Conrardy Memorial Highway.  Mr. Steimel's mother is now 92 years old and in ill health.  Senator Doll would like to put this bill on the fast track for action so Mrs. Steimel can attend an April ceremony in honor of her oldest son.

Senator Hardy said it is indicated this highway from Dodge City to Emporia is named the Turkey Wheat Trail.  Senator Doll noted six miles would be designated as this memorial highway, from the east city limits of Dodge City to 118 Road in Ford County.

Senator Skubal asked about Gregg Steimel's family.  Senator Doll said the father lived only a few years after Gregg's death.  Gregg Steimel had three brothers and four sisters.

There were no other proponents and no opponents or neutrals.  The hearing was closed.
